AMERICAN FLAG-FREEDOM — FREEDOM WORN ON THE DEFENDER

A flag can fly from a pole and belong to everybody at a distance. It means something different when somebody wears it on their own face — when the stars and stripes stop being a symbol overhead and become the identity of the person standing underneath them.

This design makes that choice boldly. A skull's face is painted in the flag itself — stars across the brow, stripes down over the bone — with two crossed rifles set beneath it and one word standing over the whole emblem: Freedom. The skull keeps the picture honest. Freedom has always been carried by mortal people, in real years of their lives, and this design refuses to pretty that part away.

That is what gives the word its weight here. Freedom is not painted on from the outside. In this emblem it is worn all the way down to the bone, by defenders who took the flag on as part of who they are — not part of what they own.

Wear it for the ones who wear the flag that deep — who carry freedom as identity, not decoration, and stand behind it with their whole lives.
