FIREMAN'S PRAYER

The words are old enough to have been said over men who fought fire with leather buckets, and they are still said tonight—in the bay before the tones drop, in a locker room at shift change, in the quiet a firefighter takes for himself with his helmet in his hands. When I am called to duty, God, wherever flames may rage.

It is not a poem to the man who says it. It is a checklist for the soul. Give me strength to save a life, whatever be its age. Let me hear the weakest shout. Let me give the best in me—and if the call asks everything, put your hand over my family. Every verse hands something over: his strength, his courage, and at the end, the people waiting at home.

That is what this design stands for: the prayer carried into the fire. It stands for the promise made before the work begins—the neighbor guarded, the child reached in time, the best given without counting the cost. And it stands for the last verse, the one every firefighter understands: a family lent to the job, and the job asked to keep them safe.

Wear it for the ones who pray it, the families who have heard it read aloud, and every firefighter who ever stepped off the rig with those words still in his mouth. Wear it because the prayer is the job, said out loud.
