PAST CHIEF — THE RANK YOU KEEP

In most jobs, when you hand over the office, you hand over the title with it. The fire service does it differently. Serve as chief, and the word stays with you for the rest of your life: Past Chief. It is spoken at the kitchen table, printed in the banquet program, and answered to long after the last shift ends.

That is what this design stands for: respect that does not retire when the authority does. A past chief carries no command anymore — and is still the first call a young officer makes at 3 a.m., still the steady voice at the hard meeting, still the living memory of every fire the department ever fought. The knowledge took a whole career to build. The house keeps it within reach.

There is no bitterness in the title, and that is the point. It honors a handover done with grace: the gavel passed, the standard intact, the experience left behind as a gift instead of a grievance.

Wear it for the past chiefs — the elders of the fire service, whose rank ended and whose service didn't. Wear it because some titles aren't given by the job. They're kept by the people.
