THIN RED LINE FIREFIGHTER — ONE LINE, HELD

In the flag this design wears, the stripes run dark and weathered — all but one. A single stripe burns red, and every firefighter reading it knows the arithmetic: the line is thin because the people holding it are few, and it is red for both the thing they stand against and the price of standing.

A line is not a wall. A wall is built to keep things out and can be left alone to do it. A line is people — shoulder to shoulder, awake, present — drawn between the fire and the town sleeping behind them. It only exists while somebody is standing in it, which means it has to be formed again every shift, in every town, by name.

The flag is drawn distressed on purpose. The line has been rained on, smoked over, folded and flown again; the wear is the record of its holding. And the Maltese cross sits in the corner where the stars belong, because for the families under that protection, the crew on the line is the part of the country that shows up in person.

Wear it for the few standing in the one stripe. Wear it thin, wear it red — wear it held.
