HOME OF THE FREE
Everybody knows the line by heart, and most people sing straight past the grammar of it. Home of the free, because of the brave. The second half is the reason for the first. Freedom is not the natural weather of a country. It is a result, and this design — the eagle over the battlefield cross — names the cause standing behind it.
The cross in the field is where that cause becomes personal: a place, a name, a person who was brave on one particular day when bravery was the most expensive thing a human being could offer. Multiply that by every field, every generation, and you get the home the rest of us wake up in — free, ordinary, and easy to take for granted.
So this is not really a design about a country. It is a design about a debt with an address. It asks the free to remember, specifically and by name where they can, the brave who made their ordinary mornings possible — and to live in a way that keeps the exchange honorable.
Wear it for the brave — the reason this is the home of the free, and the reason it stays that way.
