National Former Prisoner of War Recognition Day is observed on Saturday, April 9, 2022. The bill to commemorate former POWs was first signed into law by President Reagan in 1987. The day was founded to commemorate the surrender of up to 80,000 the United States and Filipino military personnel to the Japanese Army during the Bataan Death March on April 9, 1942. It now includes all U.S. conflicts, and we remember more than 500,000 American soldiers taken prisoner while defending our nation.
The memories of former POWs, including Senator John McCain, who was a former prisoner of war, and the recollection of many other servicemen who returned home from captivity are on the minds of those who observe this holiday. There are still troops missing today that should be remembered in the same way as those who returned.
